Instagram opens to landscape and portrait image ratios

It’s a real revolution that happened at Instagram: the photo sharing social network is letting down the exclusivity of the square format image ratio and you can from now on take and share images that will be in portrait or landscape ratios.

It’s a revolution that happened at Instagram: the photo sharing social network is letting down the exclusivity of the square format image ratio and you can from now on take and share images that will be in portrait or landscape formats.

To choose the landscape or portrait ratio over the 1:1 square format, you simply have to tape the ratio icon on the Instagram screen on your iPhone. Even though that’s a kind of revolution and some early users of Instagram will feel a bit betrayed by this change, some iPhonographers will find it handy to benefit from the image ratio they need to help their creative message. To save the square photography spirit of the early Instagram, your photography stream grid will still display square thumbnails of your photos. The photos that you shot in landscape or portrait mode will be cropped for that. To celebrate this new era at Instagram, Disney and Lucasfilm have celebrated the grand opening of this new feature by publishing the very first non-square video on Instagram which happens to be of course a Start Trek video.

As you’ve guest, these image ratios are also available for videos.
